Reading new literature

It's been a few days since I've posted. There has been a lot going on in terms of school and my obligations. I've been finding the new literature quite interesting to read.

In particular, I've found the ASIST documents to be more helpful than the safeTALK documents since they provide more practical help that people can use in remote locations.

In addition, I've read reports/reviews on how safeTALK and ASIST are beneficial to Veterans. This got me thinking about people who experience trauma in their lives and get PTSD could really benefit from having people in their lives that are suicide aware.

People who experience trauma are more likely (and people that are non-civilians such as soldiers) to have thoughts about suicide and die by suicide. So for the presentation I wanted to make sure I spent time about talking about trauma more.

In the community I teach in, people experience a lot of trauma. People are still dealing with the intergenerational trauma from Residential schools, deaths of relatives that died by suicide, alcoholism, physical/mental/emotional and sexual abuse. There is a lot of trauma that all people in the community of all ages go through. So I thought if I focused on getting the participants to remember that trauma whether it be recent or in the past, can really affect the way a person deals with its effects on their own psyche.

Having participants be more open to seeing the signs in people they know have experienced trauma can help save their lives.
